The Republic of Kiribati is a state in the southeast Pacific with a covered area of about 726km² and 74000 inhabitants. It comprises the Gilbert and the Phoenix Islands, Ocean Island, Christmas Island, Malden Island, Starbruck Island, Wostok Island, Caroline island and Flint Island. All Islands are coral islands and part of atolls, most of the inhabitants are catholic. South Tarawa is really overcrowded, about 35000 people live there. Kiribati had become known during the 2nd world war because of the battle between the US and Japan. The Republic become independent as a part of the Commonwealth in 1979.
